Frequently
Asked Questions
Q. How fast can I
raise the temperature in my pool?
A. This depends on
the size of your pool & if you are using a solar blanket. Blankets
always help your pool heat up much faster. In all our tests and customer
responses, these are the most common results. To achieve these results
you must use a blanket, tend the fire often & be burning hard dry
split seasoned wood. Round logs always burn slower. These are
averages, results may vary. The temp outside needs to be above 60 for
these results to be reliable.
Temperatures are in
the Fahrenheit Scale
1,000 gallons = 8-12
degrees per hour
10,000 gallons = 1.0 - 1.25 degrees per hour
15,000 gallons - 3/4 - 1.0 degrees per hour
20,000 gallons = 1/2 - 3/4 degrees per hour
30,000 gallons = 1/3 - 1/2 degrees per hour
40,000 gallons = 1/4 - 1/3 degrees per hour
50,000 gallons = 1/5 -1/4 degrees per hour
Q. How hot does
the water come out of the heater?
A. With the conditions listed in the above answer, the outlet water
will come 3-5 degrees warmer than the inlet water. results can be higher
than this, but this is the advertised average that we stand behind.
Q. How much wood
will the heater consume per year?
A. This depends on several factors, including your pool size, the
temperature the pool is heated to, if you use a solar blanket and how
long of a season you have in your area.
With a season from May to September you could use up to 2 cords of wood
with a large pool and a cool summer. If your season is March to November
and you have a small pool you still won't likely use more than 2 cords.
A small pool under 15,000 gallons should only use about 1 cord per year.
Q. How often do I
need to add wood to the fire?
A. If you are trying to heat the pool up quickly and are burning a
light/soft wood then about every 1 hour. If you are using good hard
heavy wood, then about every 1.5 - 2.0 hours.
Q. How do I empty
the ashes from the firebox?
A. After your fire is totally out, open both doors and scoop out all
the ashes with a small shovel down to the fire brick. Put your ashes in
a metal bucket, just in case you have hot coals.
Q. How hot should
the chimney stack thermometer get?
A. You want to keep the temperature up above 400 when heating the pool.
The higher you can get it, the quicker you will be heating your pool.
Try to keep it between 500-700.
Q. What can I do
to get my stack temperature above 400 degrees?
A. When burning your fire. Make sure to always use the entire firebox.
It is very easy to end up burning a fire in just the back or middle of
the firebox, when this happens part of your copper coils will not get
heated and your pool will not heat up efficiently. Before adding wood to
your fire, spread the hot coils to all corners of the box and lay your
wood across all the coals, crisscrossing each layer.
The next important step is to keep the main door wide open. When the
bottom door is wide open, your fire will usually burn faster & hotter.
If you follow these steps and burn split dry wood, you should get the
chimney stack up to 500 -700. The stack will not stay hot the entire
time, as the fire burns down after an hour, your temp can drop down to
200-300, this is when it's time to add wood.
Q. My pool is not
heating up like advertised, what can I do?
A. Many conditions can affect the raising of temperature in your pool.
If you are not using a good solar blanket most of your heat is going to
escape off the pool surface just as fast as you are adding heat. It is
also important to follow the steps listed on top of this page for best
results. Your water pipes could be loosing heat underground, especially
if the ground is still cold. Your pool will also loose heat into the
ground, through the walls, as if it heats up the ground around it for
the first time in the early part of the season. The air temperature
outside needs to be reaching the 60's or above during the daytime and no
colder than low 40's at night, in order to see a reasonable heat up
time. Make sure you are running enough water through the heater and
circulating the pool water fast enough, if you have a slow pump your
pool will take a long time to respond to the hot water you are pumping
into it.
